About

What is it about?

The EYE Project enables people to play an active role in gathering information about the wildlife and landscapes of the North East of England.

The region contains a huge number of different landscapes with an amazing variety of plants and animals. To conserve these and plan for the future, we need regular information about how wildlife and places are changing.

Who are we?

The EYE Project is part of the Environmental Records Information Centre (ERIC) North East. ERIC, along with the national network of local records centres, is a not-for-profit service run in partnership for the public benefit, which collects, collates, manages and disseminates information of known quality relating to the wildlife, wildlife sites and habitats of a defined geographical area.

As well as collating wildlife records through this website, ERIC holds a regional database of wildlife data gathered and owned by a wide variety of individuals and organisations. ERIC provides a central point of access to people who need up-to-date data for their work, whether it is for biodiversity conservation, planning decisions, to inform development or academic or voluntary research. ERIC uses a software programme called Recorder and operates an Arc GIS (Geographic Information System) to manage and map habitat information. ERIC also sources difficult to reach data, supports recording groups, digitises records and ensures that information is managed to a high professional standard.

ERIC and EYE are based in the Great North Museum: Hancock in Newcastle upon Tyne.

Who supports us?

EYE is a partnership between Newcastle University and Tyne and Wear Archives and Museums. The website was one of the results of a 3 year project running between 2006 and 2009. This was made possible through a grant of £226,500 from the Heritage Lottery Fund. It was sponsored by Northumbrian Water and received funding and support from Natural England the North East Regional Museums Hub, Northumberland Wildlife Trust and Tyne & Wear Museums Business Partners
